For two consecutive Sundays I have been unable to pull the Target weekly ad between about 11AM and 1PM EST (UTC -5). Sunday afternoon is my favorite time to shop the local Target store, but only after seeing the online ad first. Usually Target has the weekly ad available on the server very early on Sunday mornings. The Target retail empire will surely crumble because I have been deprived. omg! OMG! lol.
I guess the webserver and I will eventually be OK.
May be they update their servers to avoid further security breaches?
(SCNR, but I closely followed the disclosure of Target credit card data theft. I hope your data was not stolen and sold to some culprits in the darknet)
I followed the news on that, too. It was an interesting breech.
Reuters later reported that Nordstrom and “two other unnamed retailers” also had breeches. Those unnamed retailers were never named as far as I know. I guess they had pull with somebody who counted.
Anyway, there is zero liability on the store card I use at Target, and I watch my statements in almost real time. So far, so good. Also, I have a freeze on my credit records and monitor those, too.
I’ve heard that the price on the stolen data is dropping like a rock. It’s no longer fresh data.
Things do get more mysterious. In the past, I have gotten a replacement credit card from other banks with no explanation at all, other than “start using this one.” One can only imagine.
They started to exchange all of those who they knew or suspected were in the sold bunches; I think that is the only viable way to handle it.
Of course the price per card drops like a rock as soon as the validity rate of the stolen records sinks. According to the latest information I’ve got it is below 55% now – meaning: About every second card is canceled or revoked – and it will for sure decline further as the banks exchange more cards over the time or simply because several of the cards will meet their “natural” expiry date. In the meantime I have heard rumors that the culprits start offering mixes of different breaches to raise the validity and offer some kind of warranty, i.e. if you have bought a bunch in which more than x% are not valid you get replacement data …
It seems they are almost organized and operate the same as legitimate businesses by now – but that was to be expected, there is some big money to earn or loose and I can imagine that some of the buyers won’t be very amused, to put it mildly, if the would pay for invalid data. That could mean war between the groups – and not only in cyberspace …
Good description of how these things go. Thanks QuHno.
